H008759 REMEMBRANCE CARD. (Erinnerungskarten)

BACKGROUND: A common practice in Europe that continues to this day, is the issue of a remembrance card on the death of a family member. These would be distributed to friends and family as a memorial item.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 4 1/4" x 2 1/2", mid-weight, card stock remembrance card with printed script and a close-up, black and white photograph of young, "Gefr.", wearing a helmet and field-grey field blouse. The visible uniform details include a helmet decal, shoulder straps and collar tabs and a breast eagle. The script indicates the individual served with, "Brandenburger Jnf. Regt.", and fell in battle against the Bolsheviks near "Jaroslav" Russia, on, "22. Juni 1941". The card is in overall good condition with light age yellowing and a light fold crease. Of Note: The Brandenburgers were a specially trained, elite German commando unit originally utilized for covert operations. One of the original requirements for acceptance into the unit was fluency in a foreign language. The Brandenburgers served in covert operations with great success early in the war but eventually were relegated as a "fire brigade", and were no longer used as a commando unit.
