H008359 CARL EICKHORN BLADE MANUFACTURER CATALOG PAGE GROUPING. (Katalog Blatt Gruppe)
BACKGROUND: After Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in January 1933 and the reintroduction of conscription in March 1935 a wide variety of new edged weapon designs were introduced to outfit the rapidly growing Wehrmacht, (Armed Forces) and the assorted NSDAP, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (National Socialist German Worker’s Party), political and para-military organizations as well as assorted civilian organizations. The revival in edged weapon production resulted in the numerous blade manufacturers, mainly located in Solingen, to develop a wide variety of ornate designs in an attempt to compete for the lucrative manufacturing contracts which resulted in hundreds of different patterns of assorted edged weapons being produced during the Third Reich era. Originally established in Solingen in 1865 the Carl Eickhorn blade manufacturing firm was one of the largest and primary blade manufacturer’s of the Third Reich era. When the Eickhorn firm was founded they adopted the squirrel logo from an earlier sword smith, as a clever play on words as, "Eichhörnchen", is "Squirrel" in German. The Eickhorn firm employed the renown graphic artist Paul Casberg who was personally responsible for designing more edged weapon patterns then an other individual artist. Besides the standard patterns Casberg was also responsible for some of the nicest, highest quality, presentation and ornate Damascus designs produced during the Third Reich. Eickhorn advertised their edge weapons in assorted trade journals and even produced their own inventory catalogs. Of Note: The Eickhorn firm survived the war and eventually closed in 1976.
