BACKGROUND: The German army used a wide variety of optical enhancement items with the 6 x 30 power, (6 power magnification with a 30mm diameter objective lens), binoculars being the standard issue optics utilized by all branches of service. Although the 6 x 30 power binoculars were the standard issue, specialized personnel such as Artillery observers, Reconnaissance personnel, Searchlight personnel, etc., required stronger optics and assorted larger power binoculars were issued to these specialized personnel on a limited basis. When issued the binoculars came with a variety of assorted accessories which included a protective lens cover. 

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Tooled alloy and aluminum construction, 6 x 30, power, binoculars with molded dark brown bakelite fittings. The lens bodies and end piece fittings all retain about 80% of their original, smooth, ordnance tan paint with small spots of wear to the base alloy. The binoculars have molded, dark brown bakelite eye sockets which are fully intact and the focus adjustment are a bit sticky but still function. The optics are slightly blurred and smoky. The optics don’t appear to have the standard reticle pattern. The central lens joining bracket with swivel width adjustment is intact and still functions. The bottom edge of each of the lenses bodies have a small, raised, cut-out bar designed to secure the carrying strap. The carrying strap is absent. The right hand side, ocular end, body panel is well marked with the impressed designation, "Dienstglas 6 x 30", (Service Glasses), the serial number, "253747" the manufacturer’s three letter code, "ddx", indicating manufacture by Voigtländer & Sohn A.-G. Of Braunschweig and a triangular lubricant code, signifying a lubricant which was effective in temperatures ranging from +122 to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. The binoculars come with a roughly, 5/8" tall, 4 1/4" long, 1 1/2" wide, elongated, horizontal, oval molded, black rubber protective lens cover. The lens cover has two, small, rivetted on, leather securing straps with only remnants of the straps remaining. The lens cover has no visible manufacturer’s markings.
