H001458 MACHINE GUNNER'S COMMEMORATIVE LAPEL PIN. (Aufschlagnadel)
BACKGROUND: Besides the omnipresent swastika lapel badges the Germans also utilized a wide variety of decorative, commercial and award type lapel pins. One of the largest distributors of the lapel badges and pins was the WHW ,Winterhilfswerk, (Winter Assistance Work), an annual charitable donation event held by the NS-Volkswohlfahrt, (National Socialist-People’s Social Welfare Organization), in which all the assorted NSDAP organizations personnel would solicit donations from the public and reward the contributors with a wide variety of lapel badges. Along with the WHW lapel badges other organizations, including the military, issued a variety of commemorative and unofficial award badges. This example may range from being a WHW donation badge to a commemorative or even an award badge.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 1" tall, 1 3/4" wide, die stamped alloy construction lapel badge with a silver wash features an embossed uniformed and helmeted profile of a soldier firing an MG08/15. The visible details include a gasmask canister, a mess kit, a rolled quarter shelter/poncho and the MG’s bi-pod and ammunition belt. The reverse of the badge is a mirror image of the obverse and has a soldered, horizontal pin back device intact. The badge has no visible manufacturer’s markings.
