DH179 FLARE AMMO CASE. (Fackelnpatronen Kasten) 22" x 12 3/4" x 14" field-grey painted wooden case with dovetailed corner joints and a tongue and groove slat top lid. Paint is retained about 70%. Two inset metal hinges to the reverse of case attached internally to the top lid. Metal friction clips are to each end of the case with a corresponding metal hook to the lid top. The top, bottom, and all four corners have screwed on wooden reinforcement slats. Screwed on metal plates to each end of case with swivel metal carrying handles. An inset metal plate to the front of the case has a swivel locking clip for the top lid. All of the metal fixtures show moderate surface spotting. Top lid and all four sides have remnants of white stenciled script, "L. u. S. Mun. 500 Patr. Hülsenlg. 83 mm" (Signal Pistol ammunition 500 cartridge casings 83 mm). One end of case also has a white stenciled square outline for a contents decal with script, "Inhaltszette" (Contents label). The other end of the case has an impressed waffen-amt, maker’s initials and date, "HLV 1937." The case also has remnants of hand painted numerals. Interior of the case has two screwed on metal plates with remnants of web retaining straps. The case shows moderate overall wear, with numerous small chips and cracks.
